At first we were just two classmates starting our corporate careers in Richmond, Virginia. James was an army soldier, Ajay was a stock broker who worked in D.C. All we’ve ever wanted to do was to create spaces in our city that were inclusive, beautiful and creative. But most importantly, that the were located in the very communities that helped to raise us. We both wanted to bring art into our space in a way that was both comfortable and productive.
We brought alongside us, Rosxetta from Crenius and Sarah from Sarah Consults to help with curation and management. We needed this space to represent the change that was occurring in the Southside of Richmond, but we needed to keep the very essences of Blackwell alive.
Ajay and James named the gallery after a suggestions from friends directed us towards the neighborhood and culture that had been in this corridor for 6 generations. We started interviewing artists in the middle of summer 18’.
